Trung tâm Nghiên cứu và Ứng dụng Phân bón Vi sinh BioGro, tiền thân là Phòng Thí nghiệm Phân bón Vi sinh thuộc Trường Đại học Tổng hợp Hà Nội, thành lập từ năm 1984 do PGS.TS Nguyễn Thanh Hiền làm giám đốc, bắt đầu với dự án “Cố định nitơ ở vùng rễ lúa” do trường ĐHLHQ tài trợ. Có 19 nước Châu Á tham gia dự án, chúng tôi được mời là đại diện của Việt Nam.

Ý tưởng của dự án là tìm các chủng vi sinh vật cố định đạm sinh học để thay thế phân đạm hoá học. Tiếp đó Trung tâm đã nhận được sự tài trợ của các trường Đại học Hà Lan (NUFFIC), chương trình công nghệ Sinh học của nhà nước và sự tài trợ của các dự án ACIAR và AusAID, Úc, các tổ chức phi chính phủ quốc tế để tiếp tục nghiên cứu và tạo ra các sản phẩm vi sinh mang thương hiệu BioGro.

Với ý tưởng và mục tiêu phát triển BioGro vì một nền Nông nghiệp bền vững, nhóm nghiên cứu đã theo đuổi suốt 30 năm qua với quy mô từ Phòng Thí nghiệm phát triển thành Trung tâm nghiên cứu, và hiện nay là Công ty TNHH Giải pháp Xanh và Công nghệ Sinh học CÁNH CỔNG XANH – GreenGate.
